School governors play a really important part in the way a school is run. They help to make sure that students, like you, have the best educational experience possible. 

 

What Do School Governors Do?

School governors are volunteers who work with the school's leadership team. Their main responsibilities include:

1. Strategic Oversight
   This means they help to set the school's direction and goals. Think of them as captains of a ship, who decide where the ship – in this case, the school – is heading. They work with the headteacher to create a plan for the school's future, ensuring it meets the needs of all students.

2. Accountability
   Governors make sure that the school is doing its job well. They monitor the school's progress and hold the leadership team to account, which is a bit like a referee in a football match who ensures that everyone is playing by the rules.

3. Financial Management
   School governors are involved in managing the school's budget. They need to ensure that money is being spent wisely to support teaching and learning.

4. Support and Challenge
   Governors offer support to the school’s staff, helping them to improve and develop. However, they also challenge decisions that might not be in the best interest of students. Imagine a coach who cheers you on but also wants you to improve your game – that’s what governors do for teachers.
